Ah, I'm glad someone posted this before me!
I was going to myself; good to see a fellow Mortal Kombat fan on the board. I'll post a fact sheet of what we know so far about MK9/MK:
*It will be for both the PS3 and Xbox 360
*MK9 will return to the M-rating of the series, unlike MK vs. DCU's T-rating
*Blood is more realistic (i.e. not all over the place like in the past games), but the gore has been worked on to appear more so - see the posted videos
*The current slated release date is March 2011
*There will be 26 characters from MK1-MK3
*Each stage will probably be a recreation of a classic MK stage
*Netherrealm Studios wants to have DLC support for this game, to make up for the lack of it in MK vs. DCU
*The game will return to the classic 2D style fighting the series was first known for
*Two new modes include Tag Team (2 vs. 2 matches) and Co-Op Arcade (2 vs. 2 in classic MK fashion)
*Netherrealm Studios is focusing on the online as a big component of the game
*Confirmed characters include:
-Sektor
-Scorpion
-Reptile
-Johnny Cage
-Sub-Zero
-Raiden
-Shao Kahn
-Night Wolf
-Kung Lao
-Mileena
The story is such: after Blaze was defeated in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, Raiden and Shao Kahn were fighting, with Shao Kahn gaining the upper hand. When this occurred, with Raiden dying, he sent a message through time and space to his self in the past (during MK1).
MK1-era Raiden, now imbued with the knowledge of all the events to unfold, goes on a course to change history. The game will be a reboot of the franchise, covering the events of the new alternate timeline from MK1 to MK3.
Events
will be changed from the past games; did Liu Kang win the first Mortal Kombat tournament? Did a character become part of the Tekunin they didn't in 'our world'? We'll have to wait and see.
It intrigues me: Mileena and Kung Lao but no Kitana or Liu Kang so far? Very interesting indeed, Mr. Boon. Not to mention, the Sub-Zero shown doesn't have his trademark scar under his eye. That would make him, technically, Noob Saibot...
