What are some gimmicks that you can't stand in Mario games? For me, my two biggest pet peeves are auto-scrolling levels and water levels. They just go by too slowly for me.
I also hate the castle levels in the original Super Mario Bros where you need to choose the correct path or you have to repeat that segment of the level.

I don't really mind the auto-scrolling levels too much. Yes, they can go too slowly sometimes, but if you mess up a bit you really have to hurry to keep up with the screen, a bit like those levels where you must stay on the moving blue blocks. As for water levels, well what can I say? Everyone hates them, especially those damn bloopers. At least there was only one or two true underwater levels in NSMBW, the others you could just skim over the water in the penguin suit. I hadn't played the original Super Mario Bros. so I can't give an opinion on the castle levels, but I believe there was one in the Wii sequel which was slightly irritating but not too bad... My only pet peeve is that the bosses are really too easy (except the final Bowser chase in NSMBW) what with the 3-hit rule. It makes almost every boss/miniboss a total pushover and ruins the game for me. Also, come to think of it, the Toad-saving missions annoyed me, especially the ones in World 8 and 9. Thank god they were optional and didn't count towards 5 stars.

Nice topic Klepto.
I would say the castle levels in the original Mario Bros are among the worst...I really don't even find them worth playing since they're so frustrating. Personally besides the Blooper stages in Mario 3, I also found the Bowser Army and Dark World levels very tough in Mario 3. Particularly the Air ship stage in the last world that was basically a series of ridiculously tiny airship platforms, tons of canons, and those little moles. Talk about infuriating.

I was playing this on the VC and I did kinda enjoy those levels in the Dark World. The rest of the game was relatively easy so it was refreshing to have a difficult level mixed in there.

I hate that level also. I'd always save a magic P glove (or whatever they were called) to skip the level.
I also didn't like levels that had you pressed for time (Like the fortress level in World 8 in SMB3).

The one thing that I hate about platform mario games are the moving blocks that are in some castles in super mario world then in a few in NSMB ds and wii and then tried to redo them in galaxy 2 but I was ok with them they were easy lol

Even though they were tough, I did enjoy the "Dark World" Stages...if for nothing but the how evil they seemed to be. I haven't played SMG2, but it seems like Bowser has lost some of his wickedness. I mean, Bowser had a tank army that looked more like a German Blitzkrieg than anything else.
@Doppel-I know what platforms you're talking about. The ones that move similarly to a slinky but they move in all sorts of crazy directions, making it easy to fall off. I recall a castle in Super Mario World with that platform over a pit of lava...it moved in such a sporadic and unpredictable way that I died or got stuck more times than I could count!
